Foot & Ankle Pain Management

Foot & Ankle Pain Management in Bunbury & Australind

Southwest Foot & Ankle provides the podiatry service for Foot and Ankle Pain Management in Bunbury, Vasse and Australind, with our Podiatrists and specialist Podiatric Foot and Ankle Surgeon, Paul Armanasco.

How Common Is Having Foot and Ankle Pain?

As humans, our feet were not designed to walk on hard concrete or tiled surfaces, let alone stand, run or play sports all day. Being subjected to countless years of loading and injuries, foot and ankle pain or pathology is common. Many Australians live with foot and ankle pain every day. As podiatrists and podiatric surgeons, our expertise lies in providing the highest level of foot and ankle care.

What Are Some Examples of Common Conditions?

Examples of common foot & ankle conditions include:
• Bunions, hammertoes and other deformities of the foot
• Flat feet or high arched feet
• Bone spurs
• Heel pain (e.g. plantar fasciitis or Achilles tendinosis)
• Nerve conditions (e.g. Morton’s neuroma)
• Tendon and soft-tissue problems
• Foot and ankle arthritis
• Skin and nail conditions or diabetic foot care
• Paediatric foot and ankle conditions (e.g. Severs disease, in-toeing etc.)
• Sprains, fractures or dislocations of the foot and ankle

At What Age Should People Get Their Feet Checked?

Injuries or conditions of the foot and ankle can occur at all ages and walks of life. At Southwest Foot and Ankle, our clinicians are well versed in providing foot and ankle solutions for all ages, whether it be assessing a child’s flat feet or an adult with ankle arthritis.

How Do Our Clinicians Assess Foot And Ankle Conditions?

Depending on your presentation, our clinicians will ensure to take a patient history, perform a hands-on clinical assessment or specialised tests and refer patients for diagnostic imaging (e.g. x-rays, ultrasound or MRIs) as required.

Our clinicians are trained in evaluating diagnostic imaging to aid in forming an accurate diagnosis for your condition. Our team also offers on-site diagnostic portable ultrasound imaging for fast and convenient assessment of musculoskeletal structures. Occasionally, a diagnostic local anaesthetic injection may be performed.

A biomechanical assessment and gait analysis may be required to further understand the underlying root cause of your condition, which will aid in forming a tailored treatment plan.

What Are The Different Treatment Options Available?

Depending on the diagnosis and underlying cause of the condition, our clinicians will provide a tailored treatment plan which may involve over-the-counter or prescribed analgesics, custom orthotics or footwear modifications, exercise rehabilitation, gait re-training, taping and bracing or splinting devices. Shockwave therapy, injection therapy or immobilisation (e.g. moon boots or casts) may be required in some cases.

In instances where non-operative management has failed, a referral to Podiatric Foot & Ankle Surgeon, Mr Paul Armanasco, may be required for a specialist opinion. Our clinicians may require secondary input from other specialists’ part of the multi-disciplinary team (e.g. rheumatologists or pain medicine physicians) to ensure holistic care is provided.
