What To Do When You’ve Hurt Your Foot or Ankle?

If you’ve injured yourself and think it is a fractured or broken foot or ankle, rather than wait at a hospital, call Southwest Foot and Ankle Centre. We keep same-day emergency appointments available for acute lower limb injuries so patients can be seen urgently by our specialists with a management plan to recover. No referrals are necessary! We assess injuries such as:

  • Foot Fractures
  • Open Wounds
  • Suspected Broken Toes
  • Ankle Sprains
  • Acute Sport Injuries
If you have experienced a foot or ankle injury, such as a fracture or ligament tear, wearing a moon boot may be necessary to protect and rehabilitate the affected area. A moon boot, also known as a CAM walker, holds your ankle at a 90-degree angle and has a flat, rigid footbed and a rocker sole.  This enables you to walk without putting unnecessary pressure on your injury and assists in speeding up the healing process. We carry two of the most reputable Australian brands of moon boots, VACOCAST and EXCELTRAX, which offer top-quality, adjustable, and comfortable options that meet health and safety standards. Our team can also provide guidance on how to integrate a moon boot into your daily routine and when it’s appropriate to remove it.

We provide emergency lower limb injury assessments for fractures and acute soft tissue injuries. This is what you may experience:

Acute Foot & Ankle Injury:

An ankle sprain is one of the most common sports-related injuries. This often happens to those who play sports or sometimes are just walking on uneven ground. The most common ankle injuries include sprains, strains and sometimes fractures. Another common presentation is a broken toe which often occurs after kicking something like a table!

Patients will receive a prompt Assessment and Management with their emergency appointment. This may include:

  • Early examination of their injury
  • X-Rays, Ultrasound and MRI scans and other diagnostic tests as required
  • Professional injury management plan to facilitate return to activities

When Is Emergency Care Appropriate?

Emergency care is appropriate when:

  • A recent acute foot or ankle injury (sporting or recreational activities) has occurred
  • You have been advised by your GP that immediate attention is required
  • You have attended an Emergency Department and been told further management is required
