Why is Sports Rehabilitation Important?

Sports rehabilitation is a journey to allow patients with a sports injury or chronic condition to return into their chosen lifestyle activities, whether that be kicking the footy with the grandchildren, or elite competitive sports.

Sports rehabilitation aims to optimise patient pain, function, and disability, based on their own personal goals. Preventative rehabilitation (i.e. prehabilitation) is also a proactive approach to minimising injury risk.

When Should I Consult A Podiatrist For Rehabilitation?

Rehabilitation should be initiated as soon as possible following an injury to ensure timely recovery.

There is strong scientific evidence to suggest a tailored progressive rehabilitation program can allow for return-to-sports, improved mobility and activity levels, reduced pain, and significantly improvements in quality-of-life.

Our clinicians are also experts in lower limb postoperative rehabilitation. As the saying goes, if you don’t use it, you lose it!

What Is Involved in Sports Rehabilitation?

Depending on your goals, expectations and specific injury, our clinicians will create a patient-centred rehabilitation program which may consist of short-term immobilisation (e.g. splints, taping or braces), mobility/stretching exercises, a progressive strengthening exercise program, gait retraining and load management.

Manual therapies (e.g. dry needling, massage therapy) may be used as an adjunct in some cases. A thorough assessment of the injured site, lower extremity range-of-motion, muscle strength, function and balance will be performed to address all relevant deficiencies.

When Can I Return To Sports Or Activities?

Our goal at Southwest Foot and Ankle Centre is to provide the highest level of foot and ankle care, to get patients back into the activities they love. The appropriate rehabilitation is necessary to ensure the injury does not impact future performance and reduce the recurrence of further injury. With specialised functional assessments, counselling and occasionally medical imaging, our clinicians will work closely with our patients to determine when it is suitable to return to sports. This will vary from patient to patient.
